Objective

Build four foundation piles in ascending order (Ace to King) by suit. All cards start face-up.

Setup

Eight tableau columns with all 52 cards dealt face-up. Four free cells hold a single card each for temporary storage.

Gameplay

  • Foundations: Build A→K by suit.
  • Tableau: Build in descending order with alternating colors. Only single cards are moved unless you have enough free cells or empty columns.
  • Free cells: Store one card each. Cards can be moved back to tableau or foundations at any time.
  • Move limit: The number of cards you can move at once depends on how many free cells and empty columns are available.

How to Win

FreeCell is almost always winnable with the right approach. Use the four free cells wisely—they hold single cards and enable sequence moves. Plan several moves ahead. The key is creating empty columns; they let you maneuver long sequences. Build tableau columns in descending order, alternating colors. Move cards from columns with fewer options first. Reserve free cells for critical cards (Aces, cards blocking key moves). Avoid filling all four free cells unless necessary—you need at least one to move a pair. Foundations matter. Build them up steadily. Low cards in foundations free tableau space. When stuck, consider undoing to try a different sequence of moves. Many layouts have one winning path; backtracking helps find it. FreeCell rewards logical thinking—every game has a solution if you search carefully enough.
