Objective
Build eight foundations in ascending order (Ace to King) by suit. Each suit has two foundation piles. Win when all 104 cards are placed.
Setup
Ten columns of 4 face-up cards (40 cards). The remaining 64 cards form the stock.
Gameplay
- Foundations: Build A→K by suit (two piles per suit).
- Tableau: Build in descending order, same suit only. Only single cards may be moved — no sequences.
- Stock: Deal one card from the stock to the waste when stuck. Very challenging!
How to Win
Forty Thieves uses two decks and ten tableau columns. Build down in suit; only the top card of each column (or a full sequence) can move. Foundations build up by suit from Ace. Empty columns can hold any single card or complete sequence. Expose face-down cards quickly—they limit your options. Use the eight reserve cells to temporarily hold cards. Build foundations steadily; every card moved there frees tableau space. Prioritize columns with more face-down cards. Plan sequence moves carefully. Moving a long run can block or unblock key cards. Reserve cells are precious—use them to break deadlocks. The double deck creates tight layouts; patience and careful sequencing are essential. Many games are unwinnable, but skilled play improves the win rate.
